COURSE OUTCOMES
Essential Units:
E01 - Properties of Matter and the States of Matter
This unit presents the different kinds of matter, the changes they undergo, chemical and physical properties, and how they change.
PSCA Chapters 2 and 3, PSLM #2(A, B) and #3(A, B)
E02 - Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table.
Atomic Theory, the structure of atoms, and their arrangement according to their properties are established in this unit.
PSCA Chapters 4 and 5, PSLM #4(A, B) and #5(A, B)
E03 - Chemical Bonding and Naming Compounds
This unit presents and explains the interactions between atoms, the rules used to name chemical compounds, and the structure of metals
PSCA Chapters 6, PSLM #4(A, B) and #5(A, B)
E04 – Chemical Reactions, Solutions, Acids and Bases
The purpose of this unit is to survey the types of reactions, represent them as balanced equations, demonstrate chemical combinations and show how acids and bases behave chemically.
PSCA Chapters 7 and 8, PSLM #7(A, B) and #8(A, B)
E05 - Carbon and Nuclear Chemistry
This unit focuses on the variety of forms and compounds that carbon can form, and nuclear decay and reactions.
PSCA Chapters 9 and 10, PSLM #9(A, B) and #10(A, B)
E06 - Motion and Force
The detection and measurement of motion is presented and the concepts of displacement, velocity, acceleration and force, including Newton’s three laws and universal forces, are developed using friction and gravity as specific examples.
PSCA Chapters 11 and 12, PSLM #11(A, B) and #12(A, B)
E07 - Forces in Fluids, Work, Power and Machines
In this unit, the manipulation of forces in fluids is discussed and the relationship between work, power and machines is explored.
PSCA Chapters 13 and 14, PSLM #13(A, B) and #14(A, B)
E08 - Energy and Heat
The dynamic nature of energy and its transfer is described including the quantification of kinetic and gravitational potential energy, the relationship between thermal energy and temperature, and changes in states of matter.
PSCA Chapters 15 and 16, PSLM #15(A, B) and #16(A, B)
E09 - Mechanical Waves, Electromagnetic Spectrum and Optics
Students will investigate waves, their parts, and their interactions. The properties of light, how it is produced, and the order of waves in the electromagnetic spectrum are described in this unit. The manipulation of light by mirrors and lenses and optical instruments are also presented.
PSCA Chapters 17, 18, and 19, PSLM #18(A, B) and #19A
E10 – Electricity and Magnetism
This unit describes the related concepts of magnetism and electricity including the properties of magnets and their connection to electric charges, both static and moving. Electric current, its method of generation, and circuits are also presented.
PSCA Chapters 20 and 21, PSLM #20(A, B) and #21(A, B)
Selective Units:
S01 - Science Fair
This unit focuses on the practical uses of the scientific method and challenges the students to apply them to a question of their own choosing.
PSCA Chapters 1, PSLM #1(A, B)
